Born in California in 1941, Jean Pagliuso has been working with photography since the early 1980's. She was a fine arts major at U.C.L.A., and after her formal education continued to study photographic processing. Jean quickly rose in the field of fashion photography to be one of the most active woman photographers. Her career as a photographer broadened to include close collaboration with the film director Robert Altman as well as work with Paramount, Universal, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, and Disney. Additionally, the artist has taught photographic workshops in Tahoe, Maine, and Santa Fe.

Jean went back to school in 1984 to study new non silver printing processes. This began a period of experimentation with gum bichromate, platinum, kallitype and photogravure printing, and prompted a departure from her work in the field of fashion photography and her collaborative projects.

Pagliuso's photographic work of the last 10 years deals with travel, scale and with studying things that are aging and in decay. This has prompted extensive travel to Cambodia, India, Turkey, Mexico, and New Mexico. She works most often with a Hasselblaad camera and has a very hands on approach to her printing. The artist experiments extensively with printing papers and techniques for each of her projects. Her most recent use of a handmade Kaji paper for her Cambodian and Indian series produced engaging and ethereal images with incredible presence.

The artist currently lives Santa Fe, New Mexico and New York City where she has a studio in Chelsea.
