Seton Smith's fame as an artist seemed like a foregone conclusion. Daughter of world-renowned sculptor Tony Smith, Seton and her sister Kiki grew up in their father's studio, helping him create geometric forms and small-scale models from an early age. The daughters would both have their first solo exhibitions in 1980, coincidentally, the year their father died.

While her sister has worked with a number of different media, Seton has stayed with her unique method of photography. Using the Cibachrome process of printing where the color pigments are built into the paper rather than on the surface, Seton's fade resistant prints exhibit distinct colors with a glistening surface. She generally photographs either everyday objects such as lamps, bowls and chairs, or specific elements in nature, like a solitary tree or bush. In any case, her work is intentionally tough to decipher upon first glance, creating the illusion that the picture is not an instant in time. For this reason, Seton Smith's work is open to wide range of interpretation as it attempts to draw upon the individual memory of each viewer.
