Announcing a New Release by Seton Smith
Marlborough Graphics is pleased to announce the release of two prints by photographer Seton Smith, the gallery’s first project with the artist. The prints were printed from two plates in two colors by Harlan and Weaver in New York City. The photogravure plates were prepared by Mark Callen of Infinity Photogravure.
From One Tree and To Another are two photogravures printed in colors depicting trees in a timeless, classical landscape. The prints are indicative of Smith’s style and approach to photography in their soft focus and flickering quality of light. The time and place are elusive, making them almost like a memory or a fiction.
This project marks Smith’s first encounter with the medium of photogravure. The artist’s desire to work in color was a technical challenge in this already complex medium, and necessitated the use of two plates; an aquatint plate printed in yellowish green, and a gravure plate printed in blue.
