Pablo PICASSO

Pablo Picasso, born in1881 in Malaga, Spain, lived a lifetime replete with artistic achievements until his death in 1973. Picasso's skill as a graphic artist spanned six decades, from the Blue Period etchings made when he was just 25 to his inspired use of linocut in his 70s, and contributed to his position as the greatest artist of the 20th century. In the 1940s Picasso began the association with Fernand Mourlot, who was to produce all his major lithographs. The directness of the technique lent itself well to portraits and also allowed Picasso a greater scope to experiment, transforming one image to another on the plate. Picasso's interest in linocut sprang initially from poster design. While this exploration led to new possibilities, Picasso also discovered its technical limitations. Overcoming these confines led to new ways of creating his images, and to making some of the most original prints of his later life.

Picasso's works are included in museums and public collections worldwide including Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; Fine Arts Museums San Francisco, California; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Musée National Picasso, Paris, France; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain; Museo Nacional de Belles Artes, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Museu Picasso, Barcelona, Spain; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; National Gallery of London, England; The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow, Russia; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; and the Tate Britain, London, England.
