Jane Dickson

Biography

Jane Dickson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1952. She graduated Magna cum Laude from Harvard University with a degree in Visual Studies in 1976. From there, she went on to the School of Boston Museum of Fine Arts where she received a Studio Diploma, also in 1976.

The subjects of Dickson's paintings and prints are uniquely American, not unlike that of Edward Hopper. However, whereas Hopper was interested in the sensible and humble side of Americana, Dickson's work suggests an ominous urban landscape against which it can be difficult to maintain compassion. The most prevalent themes in Dickson's work are the road, voyeurism, sexuality and urban life at night, which she captures in her characteristic style of juxtapoing dark recesses with fluorescent imagery.
