Robert Weingarten

Biography

Despite Robert Weingarten’s early-discovered passion for photography, he spent thirty years after his graduation from Baruch College pursuing a career in finance and serving as CEO and Chairman of several financial institutions. He experimented with photography throughout these years as time would permit, and at the age of 54 decided to fully commit himself to his passion.

Weingarten’s landscapes often showcase repetitive natural forms and magnificent hues.  The series 6:30 A.M., for which Weingarten photographed the same view throughout one year from his Malibu home, is a perfect example of this style.  The series displays his ability to evoke a sense of natural superiority reminiscent of the Hudson River School painters while exhibiting an Impressionistic sensibility. In his 2005 Palette Series, he strives to invert the historical phenomenon of photography leading to abstract painting by creating abstract images from artists’ paint palettes. He thus, “further abstracts painting from photography,” as he stated in an interview.

Robert Weingarten’s work has been included in many collections worldwide, including: J. Paul Getty Museum, California; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and The Whitney Museum of American Arts, New York.

Robert Weingarten's work will be featured in the upcoming exhibitions: Robert Weingarten: The Palette Series, September 19- November 15, 2009 at the Springfield Art Museum, Missouri; The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten, January 23- April 4, 2010 at the High Museum of Art, Georgia.
